Abstract

This study investigated the need analysis of English for Specific materials for computer science students. The objectives of this study were to find out (1) the students’ present situation, (2) the English language skills, (3) language components (grammar and vocabulary), and (4) topics mostly needed by the computer science students of the ESP course. This study used mixed method research design. The data were collected by using questionnaire and Interview. The results of the study exhibited that the current English course did not meet the students’ needs. Moreover, the result showed that reading skill was the most important skills needed by the computer science students. The most important grammar materials for the computer science students were past and present tense. Meanwhile, general vocabulary, specific vocabulary and technical vocabulary perceived as very important materials that must be mastered by the computer science students. Finally, the most important topics were programming language, website, human – computer interaction, Job in IT, data security, multimedia and introduction to information technology. The results of this study can be used as a basis for developing effective syllabi and materials so that it can meet the English requirements for the students’ daily life and work. Finally, the next researcher can future conduct a research on the other language components needed by the computer science students.
