Abstract
The aims of this research were to find out the students’ ability to translate noun phrases. This research applied a descriptive study that used a quantitative design. The subjects were 76 of six-semester students of English Department at the University of Bengkulu in the academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected from a Test. The data were analyzed by using Sudjana’s formula and the level of categories of Harris’s formula. The result showed the percentage of students’ ability to translate noun phrases was 67.1%. It means that more than half of the total subjects were in a poor category. In spite of the students were in poor category to translate noun phrases, actually they have applied translation principle that is translating the text as a whole not word-to-word. There seem several factors that many influence the students translation, namely: Indonesian rules, equivalence word, meaning lost, strategy of learning, idiomatic translation, and using dictionary.
