Abstract

This research aims to investigate the correlation between students‟ anxiety and their speaking quality and students‟ strategies to anticipate anxiety at 6th Semester Students of English Study Program in Universitas Bengkulu. This research used quantitative correlation method. The population of this research were 79 students and the samples were 20 students. The data of this research were collected by using questionnaire, speaking test, and interview. The data of questionnaire and speaking test instruments were used to measure the correlation between students‟ anxiety and their speaking quality. The result of the first research question showed that there was a correlation between students‟ anxiety and their speaking quality. It was proved by rcount (0.491) which was bigger than rtable ( 0.443) in the degree significance 5%. It means that the null hyphotheses (H0) was rejected and the alternative hyphotheses (H1) was accepted. From the result, it could be conclude that there was a negative correlation between students‟ anxiety and their speaking quality. The result of second research question was about students‟ speaking strategies to anticipate anxiety. Based on the result there were two common strategies chose from the six speaking anxiety strategies. The two strategies were memory strategies and social strategies. It proved by there 65% students from 100% chosen memory strategies and 60% students chosen social strategies as students common strategies to anticipate their speaking anxiety.
