Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the teachers’ strategies in teaching English in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu and which one is dominantly used by the English teachers in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu. The subject of this research was four English teachers in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu. Descriptive Quantitative method is the methodology of the research and the data was collected by using observation checklist and transcription of video recording. The observation checklist was consisted of eight teaching strategies by Eriști and Akdeniz (2012), yes/no coloumn and note coloumn. The transcription was contained whilst teaching activities of each teachers. A formula from Arikunto (2006) was used in finding the percentage of the teaching strategies used by the teachers in order to find which strategy is dominantly used by the English teachers in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu. The result of data analysis shows that four from eight teaching strategies are not employed by the English teachers in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu. English teachers strategies used in teaching English are: question - answer strategy (75%), discussion - brainstorming strategy (50%), writing/ summarize/ taking note strategy (25%), and presentation strategy (25%). The finding shows that English teachers in SMA Negeri 2 Kota Bengkulu dominantly used question – answer strategy with the percentage 75% as their stategy in teaching English to students.
