Abstract

Abstract:The purposes of this research were to find out the types of errors and the percentages of errors made by the students in using Simple Past Tense in writing recount text. The method was descriptive quantitative method. The sources of data were the first grade students of SMAN 4 Bengkulu. The population of this study consisted of the first year students at SMAN 4 Bengkulu.There are 5 classes at the first grade students in SMAN 4 : X IPS1, X IPS 2, X IPS 3, X IPS 4, and X IPS 5 with the total of students are 152 students. The sample of this study was the students of XIPS 5, the class consisted of 27 students. Based on the results of the analysis, the result of errors that was made by the students were 115 items. The highest frequency of errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy was misformation that was 78 (67.82%). The next frequencies were omission that was 21 errors (18.26%), followed by addition that was 10 (8.69%), and the lowest one was misordering consisted of 6 errors or (5.21%). The conclusion of this research was most of the students still committed all types of errors, they still had problem with English grammar.
