Abstract

Abstract- The aim of this descriptive study was to find out the types of initial activity applied by the teachers in teaching English at the first grade of SMP IT IQRA’ Bengkulu city, Indonesia. The population of this study consisted of 5 teachers and 8 classes, using two sets of observation checklist for teachers’ initial activity and for student’ response, with a total of 150 checklist applied by five English teachers in three times meeting. Total sampling was used. The data were collected by using checklist as an instrument by theory. Checklists were used to analyze initial activity types that used by the teachers and students’ response. The results showed that there were 2 types of initial activities that used by the teacher, ice breaking type that used 4 teachers by 5 teachers is (66.7%). And brainstorming type that used 3 teachers by 5 teachers is (33.3%). The choice of initial activities that used by the teachers of SMP IT IQRA’ Kota Bengkulu get a good response in High category. Therefore, ice breaking type of initial activities that more effective that used by the teachers is ice breaking type in Yel-yel and Passionate Sentence. This might be intended the motivate students to stay motivated to follow the learning with a long duration (+_ 10 hours). Keywords: Ice Breaking, Brainstorming, and Students’ Response
