Abstract

This research is aimed at finding the teacher talk categories used by English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu and which one is dominantly used by the English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. The subject of this research was three English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. Quantitative method design is the methodology of the research and the data was collected by using transcription of video recording and observation sheet. The transcription was consisted of one meeting of teaching and learning activity of each teacher. The observation sheet was consisted of teacher talk categories by Moskowitz (1971), tally, number, and the description. A formula from Sudijono (2010) was used in finding the percentage of the teacher talk used by the teachers in order to find which categories is dominantly used by the English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. The result of the data analysis shows that one from eleven categories of teacher talk are not employed by the English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. Categories of teacher talk used by the teachers are: Gives information (54.55%). asks question (23.80%). gives direction (8.54%), deals with feelings 4.78%, praises or encourages (2.96%), uses ideas of students (1.93%), repeats students response verbatim (1.13%), corrects without rejection (1.13%), jokes (0.91%) and criticizes students response (0.22%). The finding shows that English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu dominantly used gives information categories with the total of percentage 54.55% as their category in teaching the teaching and learning activity.
