Abstract
This research aimed at finding the strategies applied by the teacher in teaching English, and to find out how the teachers applied the strategies in teaching English. This is a descriptive research. The sample of this research were three English teachers from SMP Negeri 1 Kota Bengkulu, SMP Negeri 11 Kota Bengkulu, SMP Negeri 22 Kota Bengkulu. The data are collected by using documentation. The result showed there were six strategies that applied by English teacher in teaching English. All the strategies were done in the same portion. The teachers applied the strategies by for setting clear lesson goals, the teachers conveyed and explained the lesson goals to students in classes; for showing and telling through an image/photo, the teachers also provided information to students about matters relating to the material to be studied; for questioning to check for understanding, the teachers threw a few questions to students to ensure if students understand or not with the lessons learned; for plenty of practicing, the teachers gave a lot of practice orally; for being flexible how long it takes to learn, the teachers were flexible because they did not provide time instruction for each exercise; and for getting students working together (in productive ways), the teachers provided opportunities for students to discuss in groups, and cooperate with honesty, thoroughness and tolerance.
