Abstract

As it is known that metal materials have a high conductivity value, when used in a high temperature working environment, it becomes an obstacle if the metal is in direct contact with the operator, therefore the metal is coated with an insulating material such as a composite. In this study, composites were combined with metal to determine the ability of the resin to adhere to metal and the toughness of the composite and metal combination. The materials used are lantung fiber, glass fiber, resin vinylester, copper, ST 37 steel, and aluminum. In the impact test with variations without coating and with a layer, for the metal that is given a coating consists of lantung, lantung glas lantung, glass lantung glass, and glass. The process of coating metal with composites uses a hand lay-up technique. The tests carried out include testing the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and impact testing. The impact test standard used is ASTM E 23. The test is carried out at the Bengkulu University Materials lab The results showed that steel combined with composites had the highest toughness and interfacial shear strength compared to other metals. The highest toughness value was obtained in the combination of steel with glass fiber reinforced composite of 0.30 kJ/m2. The highest value of shear strength was obtained in the combination of steel with glass fiber composite of 0.663 MPa. From these data, steel coated with glass composite is recommended because it has high adhesion. Keywords : composite, Interfacial sheer strength(IFSS), Lantung Fiber
