Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the ffectiveness of the Think Pair Share (TPS) strategy as the teaching technique in improving Speaking Confidence. The subject of this research was the students of Grade XII IPA C SMAN 6 Kota Bengkulu that consisted of 30 students. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) that was conducted in three cycles. Each cycle consisted four stages namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data was taken from observation checklist that fulfilled by the collaborator during the action with implementing the TPS Teaching Strategy. There was also Selfesteem Questionnaire given to the students at the action stage of end of the third cycle. In this research, the students’ speaking was divided into two categories;they were Confident and Not Confident. The result of this research shows thatTPS Teaching Strategy could improve students’ speaking confidence. In cycle 1,the percentage of students’ speaking confidence consisted of 26,6% (8 students) in category Confident and 73,3% (22 students) in category Not Confident. In cycle 2, the percentage of students’ speaking confidence was increased became 46,6% (14 students) in category Confident and there were 53,3% (16 students) was still in category Not Confident. Because of this result could not achieved the target of this research, so the researcher conducted the cycle 3 with the result : 66,6% (20 students) in category Confident and only 33,3% (10 students) were still in category Not Confident. This result indicated that this research succeed to reach the target of this research which there were more than 60% students became Confident. The students also showed positive responses as the researcher has analyzed from the result of self-esteem questionnaire that the students had fulfilled at the end of the third cycle. They were more enthusiastic and show their confidence in English lesoon, especially in speaking class. The conclusion of this research that TPS Teaching Strategy was succeed to help students improved their self-confidence in speaking. Overall, TPS Teaching Strategy could be applied in teaching and learning process especially in speaking.
