Abstract

This research concerned about reading strategy used by the TOEFL course participants in TOEFL test. The sample of this research were 5th and 7th semester students in academic year 2019/2020 who had taken TOEFL in Lab. Bahasa, FKIP, Universitas Bengkulu. The total sample was 50 students out of 250 students. This research was a quantitative-qualitative research. The researcher used questionnaire and interview as the instruments of this research. This research used simple statistical (percentage) to analyze the data. The result of this research showed that the participants used all the types of reading strategy in TOEFL test. Namely; metacognitive strategy, testing strategy, compensation strategy and cognitive strategy. Meanwhile, the female participants used testing strategy and the male participants used metacognitive. This study revealed that the participants‟ reasons both females and males in using that strategy are; to make easier in answering questions, understanding the text and to make the time effective and efficient.
