Abstract

Twenty-three 7-alkoxycoumarins an d related analog s were synth esized from 7-hydroxycoum arin by treatment wit h vari ous alkyl/aryl/acyl halides and potassium carbonate in DMF. Their antifee dant and termiticidal activities agai nst Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki were examine d. Am ong t h e 2 3 c o mpounds and control, 7-cyclohexyloxycoum arin ( 2k ), exhib ited the highest termiticidal activity in no-choi ce test, followed by 7-(4-nitrophenoxy)c ouma rin ( 2q ), and 7- (2-butynyloxy)cou marin ( 2u )at 5 m mo l/disc. On the other ha nd, all of 7-alkoxycoumarins showed antifee dant activity except 7-hexadecyloxycou marin ( 2i ) and 7-o ctadecyloxycou marin ( 2j ), while 7-eth oxycoum arin ( 2b ) demon strated the highes t antifeeda nt activity. The results sug gested that a presence of cyclohexyloxy and aryloxy groups at C-7 positio n o f couma rin skeleton wa s found to be importa nt for the termiticidal and antifee dant activities. Arylalkoxy groups having meth ox y groups at be nzene ri ng, alke noxy, and alkyn ox y groups led to analogs with good termiticidal activity, w h ile the incorpo ration of alkoxy groups with lon ger alkyl chai ns tended to reduce both the termiticidal and antifee dant activities.
