Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of subtitle strategies applied in the The Lion King movie (2019). The research method in this study is descriptive qualitative that involves 889 utterances of the movie transcript and 89 utterances are chosen by using random sampling technique. The object of this study is the transcript of The Lion King movie where the English text becomes the source language (SL) and Indonesian becomes the target language (TL) which is then analyzed. The data are analyzed based on Gottlieb’s (1992) theory. The research found that the ten subtitle strategies based on Gottlieb’s (1992) theory were applied in the movie. Those were Paraphrase, Transfer, Expansion, Deletion, Condensation, Imitation, Dislocation, Decimation, Resignation and Transcription. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the Paraphrase strategy became the most dominant. This strategy mostly occurred probably because it was appropriate as the target audience and the aims of the subtitle which must be readable and understandable. Overall, the subtitler translated the source language completely and precisely. Besides, Transcription strategy was the most rarely used in The Lion King Movie propably in order to minimize the use of foreign languages with unfamiliar terms for the audience's background knowledge of children.
