Abstract

The use of inappropriate transition words can make the ideas and meanings in the student thesis literature review incomprehensible to the reader. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the errors of transition words and the causes of them. The research design was the mixed method. The subjects in this research were 27 thesis literature reviews derived from the students of the English Education Study Program Universitas Bengkulu who graduated in April 2021. The data were collected through a table checklist and interview. The surface taxonomy theory proposed by James (2013) was used to analyzed and classified the errors of transition signals made by undergraduate students thesis literature review into four types; in addition, the interlingual and the intralingual theory proposed by Richard and Schmidt (2010) was used to analyzed the causes of error of transition signals made by undergraduate students in their thesis literature review. The result of this study found that the omission errors are two-hundred seventy (270) times or sixty-three point eight percent (63.8%), addition errors are seventy-four (74) times or seventeen point four percent (17.4%), misformation errors are seventy-five (75) times or seventeen point seven percent (17.7%), and misordering errors are four (4) times or zero point ninety-four percent (0.94%). Meanwhile, the causes of error of transition signals were obtained through interview showed that intralingual errors are fourty-five (45) cases, and the interlingual errors are nine (9) cases. Based on the results, omission errors in the use of transition words were the most frequent errors and intralingual errors were the cases that most affected students in using transition signals. Finally, the researcher suggests to the lecturers to re-emphasize the word transition in practical and theoretical teaching and learning activities.
