Abstract

The aim of this research is to illustrate Rendai’s art in the traditional ceremony of Bimbang Gedang in Bengkulu City and explains the values contained in Rendai’s art which is still held by the supporting community. This research also attempts to show what has changed in Rendai's art when compared with the procession done in ancient times. This study was conducted using the theory of Symbolic Interactionism. This research uses qualitative explorative method. Data collection technique is done through the process of observation, interview, and documentation. The selection of informants was based on Snowball Sampling technique. Data analysis is done qualitatively includes testing, selection of categorization, evaluation, comparing, data reduction to the conclusion and evaluation concepts as a result of research. The results show that Rendai is an art brought by King Pagaruyung from Minangkabau who migrated to Selali, Pino Raya, South Bengkulu. But it is not known exactly the entry of Rendai in Bengkulu. In the traditional ceremony of Bimbang Gedang, Rendai showed during the procession of Pengantin Mandi-mandi, Menapa (berendai), Tari Gendang , Mutus Tari Kain, and Nutup (Gendang Serunai). Beyond the traditional procession, Bimbang Gedang, Rendai also showed in guest welcoming ceremony. Values that contained in this art are social value formed from rules and integration, moral value contained in advice, tenet, and politeness, also other aesthetic values contained in the elements of gestures, musical accompaniment, pantun or poetry, and clothes.
