Abstract

This research was aimed to find out weather there was a significant effect of using SMART (Self Monitoring Approach to Read and Think) strategy on stu d en ts‟ reading ability to comprehend descriptive texts. The design was a quasi experimental research. The sample consisted of 60 students; 30 students for the experiment group and 30 students for control group. The instrument was a reading test which comprised 30 multiple choice (4 options) questions with r=0,83. The research findings were as follows; (1) SMART strategy was effective to improve students‟ whole reading comprehension, (2) SMART strategy was effective to improve students‟ comprehension in the aspect of finding main idea, (3) SMART strategy was effective to improve students‟ comprehension in the aspect of identifying specific information. However, SMART strategy was not effective to improve students‟ comprehension in the aspect of (a) making inference and (b) understanding vocabulary and determining reference. Further study is recommended for a senior secondary school.
