Abstract

This research was descriptive qualitative research. It was aimed at describing the types and form of slang, the contextual meaning and also the most dominant slang in American Gangster movie. The data were collected through reading the script and watching the movie. The researcher used Partridge theory in Sari (2010) to analyze the types and form of slang. There are 622 lines on the script of the film. The findings showed that there were three types of slang in the movie. They were society slang, public house slang and workmen’s slang. The researcher analyse the meaning of slang by using two dictionaries of slang, they were NTC’s Dictionary of American Slang and Coll oquial Ex pressi on 3rd Edition and The Concise New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English. The most dominant slang in the movie is the form of “fuck”. The form of fuck is almost used by all of black people and the environment that close with drug, crime and sex. Slang is also categorized as the informal language.
