Abstract

The researcher aimed at determining the types of figurative language in Cinderella (1950 soundtrack) album, and their meanings. In this research, the method used was descriptive qualitative method, the instrument was the researcher itself and tables. Four from twelve song of the album were picked for this research. Figurative language found in the lyrics were categorized into twelve categories based on Perrine’s theory (1997). Then, both co-text and contextual meanings were combined in analyzing the figurative meaning found in the song. The result showed from twelve types of figurative language, there were only eight of them that appeared namely Apostrophe, Hyperbole, Irony, Metaphor, Personification, Simile, Synecdoche, and Symbol. In total there were twenty- five figurative language usages found. The most used type were Hyperbole and Personification with equal number of six. While the least were Irony and Simile both only appeared one in quantity. Meanwhile, the four types of figurative language that were not found namely Allegory, Metonymy, Paradox, and Understatement. The reason of the occurrence of figurative language was to put a balance between the song lyrics artistic value and complexity so the song was beautiful and enjoyable. Furthermore based on the meanings found in the research, the figurative language was beautified and added poetic effects in the lyrics, thus successfully gave the dramatic effect needed in the movie. Also the finding revealed that Cinderella (1950 soundtrack) album songs were family-friendly and safe from harmful meaning that possibly implied in the song.
