Abstract

In research articles, the conclusion section has an important role because it provides summary of the study, the significance and limitation of the study, evaluation of methodology, recommendation for further study, and pedagogic implications. However, authors from different language background (Indonesian and English) may address this section differently. This is because the writing style in different languages tend to be different. This present study investigates the differences and or the similarities of the rhetorical structure in the conclusions section used in the national journals written by Indonesian authors, non-native speakers, and international journals written by international authors. This study used a content analysis method using Yang and Allison's model (2003). The data were collected from 80 journal articles of national and international journal articles in applied linguistics. The findings showed that Move 1 (the summary of the study results) was categorized as obligatory move in both national and international journals. Meanwhile, other moves (Move 2 and 3) were classified as conventional and optional move because there were significant differences where the frequency was found. This study provides information about rhetorical structure in the conclusions section of research articles to increase the authors’ awareness of the importance of three moves in the conclusion section. Keywords: rhetorical structure, conclusion section, research article, applied linguistics
