Abstract

The students of senior high school still need a long time to understand reading texts. In English textbooks, the existence of lexical bundles can help students to understand the meaning of the reading text. This study investigated the lexical bundles found in the reading passages of English textbooks for senior high school. There were two objectives for this research. The first is to find the difference between 3-word and 4-word lexical bundles in readings passages in English textbooks for senior high school. Second, to find the categories of lexical bundles found in reading passages in English textbooks for senior high schools. The method used in this research was descriptive quantitative used reading in an English textbook for senior high schools entitled "Bahasa Inggris". In addition, this research used the theory from Biber. According to Biber, the categories of lexical bundles are noun phrases, verb phrases, and prepositional phrases. Data collection in research was assisted by AntconC software to determine lexical bundles and analyze lexical bundles according to lexical bundles categories. The results of this research found that there were 55 lexical bundles in X grade, 60 lexical bundles in XI grade, and 81 lexical bundles in XII grade. Then, categories of the lexical bundles, there were 102 noun phrases, 49 verb phrases, and 45 preposition phrases. Lexical bundles three-word and four-word were found in reading passages in English textbooks. Then, lexical bundles three-word had the highest occurrence rate compared to the four-word lexical bundle. In addition, the category of noun phrases was used more often than the categories of verb phrases and prepositional phrases in reading passages of English textbooks for senior high schools. Therefore, it is recommended to use more lexical bundles in English textbooks for senior high schools. So, with lots of lexical bundles, students can understand English naturally, and students can understand the text. Keywords: Lexical Bundles, Reading, and Textbook
