Abstract

Yield of chili pepper can be improved by creating superior lines by means of plant breeding. One of the critical steps in the breeding program is to determine yield potential of the resulted homozygot lines through yield trials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performances of ten homozygot lines derived from Talang Semut x Tit Super and to select the most potential lines in term of preliminary yield trial. The study was conducted in the experimental field of Agriculture Faculty, University of Bengkulu from May to September 2005. Ten out of 25 F7 lines derived from Talang Semut and Tit Super cross and their parental were set up in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Observations were made on plant height, time to first floral appearance, stem base diameter, time to first harvest, fruit number per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, seed number per fruit, carpelum thickness, single fruit weight, fruit weight per plant, and fruit weight per plot. Mean performances of the selected lines were as follows. Plant height at first harvest was 64,25 cm with a selection differential 7,85 cm, plant height at final harvest was 65,60 cm with selection differential 7,90 cm, stem base diameter at flowering time and final harvest were 0,60 cm and 1,01 cm with selection differential 0,04 cm and 0,11 cm respectively, time to first floral appearance was 28,85 dap with selection differential 1,26 dap, time to first harvest was 73,90 dap with selection differential 5,21 hari, fruit number per plant was 70,99 with selection differential 19.42, fruit length was 7,98 cm with selection differential 0,74 cm, fruit diameter was 0,90 cm with selection differential 0,08 cm, carpelum thickness was 0,15 cm with selection differential 0,00539, seed number per fruit was 60,90 with selection differential 8,78, single fruit weight was 2,66 g with selection differential 0,49 g, fruit weight per plant was 143,40 g with selection differential 36,06 g, and fruit weight per plot was 26,28 g with selection differential 487,60 g. Lines yielded fruit weight per plant higher than the mean of selected lines were 29L3 (164,21 g) and 35C2 (173,39 g), while 05E2 (131,52 g), 09L3 (105,18 g), 10H2 (141,96 g), and 24D2 (119,17 g) were yielded less than the mean of selected lines but they were higher than the mean of the parental.
