Abstract

This research aimed to find out the kinds of written feedback used by English teachers on students' narrative text in writing class at SMPN 10 Bengkulu Tengah. In this research, the method used was descriptive qualitative and document analysis, in which the data were taken from the analysis of students' writing given written feedback from the English teacher. The data were collected by documentation. The instrument was the researcher herself and table analysis. Data analysis techniques are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The result of this research showed that English teachers used four of six categories of written feedback, they were; Direct Feedback (Delete, Insert, Replace, Rewrite), while the type that did not used were; Indirect Feedback (Code and Un-Code). The total of the written feedback used by teachers found were 51 types of written feedback. The most dominant way used by English teachers in correcting the students' writing is the teacher only gave scores in the form of numbers. Therefore, future researchers are advised to increase the number of participants and research context and use other data collection methods such as teacher interviews and to conduct research at the senior high school level, this can be done at vocational high schools majoring in health, engineering, or other majors. In addition, future researchers are advised to analyze more data to get a holistic analysis and understanding of the problem. Keywords: Written feedback, Narrative text, English teachers.
