Abstract
By Grice's cooperative principle theory (1975), this thesis aims to identify the types of broken maxim that occur and the effects caused by broken maxims in conversations between characters in the Spongebob Squarepants series "You Don't Know Sponge". This study used a qualitative method. The data was obtained from the conversation script that occurred between the characters in the Spongebob Squarepants series "You Don't Know Sponge" which aired on August 9, 2010. Based on the data obtained, there were one hundred and seven maxim violations and three effects caused by the violation the. The type of finding that was most often violated was the maxim violation, which was ninety-eight times and the least violated was the opting maxim, which was two times.
