Abstract

Scientific writing is believed as a difficult thing to do in English writing. The abstract is one part of writing in the thesis that must exist. The objectives of this study were: first, to describe the types of grammatical errors that are frequently found in English Theses Abstracts by English Postgraduate Students at Bengkulu University for the 2020/2021 Academic Year; second, to describe the source of the grammatical errors in English Theses Abstracts by English Postgraduate Students. This research used a quantitative method. The results show first the types of grammatical errors found in English Theses Abstracts were three types: omissions 45 times (47%), additions 18 times (19%), and misinformation 33 times (34%). The grammatical error types frequently found in English Theses Abstracts are omission, higher than other types of errors. Second The sources of the errors in English Theses Abstracts are interlingual and intralingual. And the highest source of error in grammatical errors is interlingual or can be classified as L1 interference (67 times). The highest aspect of grammatical errors in English Theses Abstracts which frequently occur is the omission of articles (17 times) and the misformation of prepositions (17 times). So, it can be concluded that grammatical errors still appear in the thesis abstracts from students, where omission errors are the most common error made by students and the highest source of grammatical error is interlingual interference. The study suggests that English lecturers should use peer correction methods to help students understand and correct errors, preventing recurrence in future essays. The students should pay more attention to English grammar, comprehend faults, and manage grammatical issues properly. Keywords: Scientific Writing, Abstract, Grammatical Errors.
