Abstract

This research aims to reveal the frequency of noun phrases types in English Textbooks for Junior High Schools. This research used Mix Method. Data were analyzed using the Transformation Generative Grammar theory by Noam Choamsky (1955) to find Types of Noun Phrases. The results of this research are based on the types of noun phrase found in the reading passages in English Textbooks for Junior High Schools in the three different grades. From the three textbooks, researcher found the four types of noun phrase, namely Single Noun(type 1) , Pre-modifier + Head Noun(type 2), Head Noun + Post-modifier(type 3), and Pre-modifier + Head Noun + Post-modifier(type 4). The first and second types of Noun Phrase are highest frequent among the four types. The third and fourth types of Noun Phrase are least frequent among the four types. The frequency of the first and Second types of Noun Phrase are highest frequent in all textbooks. The frequency of the third and fourth types of Noun Phrase are least frequent in all textbooks. The frequency of Noun Phrase in the three textbooks are increased following the textbooks grades. The conclusion, the length and complexity of the text and the level of student understanding on reading in the three textbooks are different.
