Abstract

The research focuses on a structural analysis of the speeches of Obama that uses the Toulmin Model as the framework. The model helps to determine how argumentative elements and persuasive strategies are deployed in his speeches. Through the examination of Toulmin´s proposition components throughout the different sections, the research targets revealing strategic approaches in Obama's persuasion through rhetorical structure using the content analysis method. After a complete examination, it was discovered that Obama's speeches adhere to the Toulmin model, and from the result can be seen the claims and data/grounds are present in all sections, particularly in the introduction, body, and conclusion. In addition to that, the results prove the proposition of the thesis and evidence-based approach to argumentation through the use of warrants and backings. In this, qualifiers and rebuttals function to guard against counterarguments and captivate the audience. In short, the simple model is preferable to the other model. The use of all models highlights Obama's competency in constructing catchy narratives and engaging a listening in different audiences by using structured communication techniques manifesting in the complicated dynamics and politics of rhetorical persuasion. Keywords: Speeches, Toulmin Model, Argumentative Elements, Persuasive Strategies, Rhetorical Analysis.
