Abstract

This research discussed the speech acts used by Retno Marsudi in her speech at the General Assembly of The United Nations on October 26, 2023, which aimed to find out the types of illocution acts used by Retno Marsudi in her speech and find out the most frequent illocution act type applied by Retno Marsudi in her speech. Using a qualitative method with content analysis, the data were obtained from Retno Marsudi’s speech transcript and utilized a checklist instrument table to gather the data. The data were analyzed by using a classification of illocution acts theory by Searle (1969). This research revealed the illocution act types used by Retno Marsudi’s speech, the data occurrence of each type was 26 data of the assertive type, 13 data of the directive type, 1 data of the expressive type, 1 data of the declarative type, and 0 data of the commissive type. The meaning of each action was also described as the results. It can be concluded that in diplomatic speech, assertive speech act is dominant. Since diplomatic speech contains the facts or information about something or some condition that is the topic of the speech. Keywords: Speech Acts, Illocution Acts, Retno Marsudi Speech.
