Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of conversational implicatures on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and to determine the meaning of generalized implicatures based on the context. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with the assistance of checklist instruments and interpretation. The procedures for data collection in this study included: downloading all videos and transcripts that had been checked twice, watching and recording utterances containing conversational implicatures, coding or labeling the utterances according to their types, analyzing and explaining the reasons, and then drawing conclusions from the results. Specifically for the generalized implicature type, the researcher conducted a more in-depth study to understand the meaning of utterances containing that type. The objects of the research included all utterances in the videos between Jimmy Fallon and the guests. This study used the theories of Grice (1975) and Levinson (1991), which divide conversational implicatures into generalized (GCI) and particularized (PCI). The results showed that there were 57 conversational implicatures, with 24 generalized and 33 particularized. These were influenced by several factors, including the context and the relationship between the guest and the host. The occurrence of each type of implicature was also influenced by certain factors, with social context being the most influential factor. It was concluded that particularized implicatures were more dominant in the conversations, influenced by the intimacy and social factors between the host and the guests. This research suggested that future researchers can use different objects and theories in the area of implicature. Keywords: Conversational Implicature, Generalized Implicature, Particularized Implicature , Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon
