Abstract
This study aimed to determine the types of politeness strategies and to identify the similarities and differences in the use of these strategies by Piers Morgan in his interactions with guests holding different views on 'veganism'. The transcript of the "Piers Morgan Uncensored" talk show was the main source for this research, and the identified data was classified into instruments which was observation check-list table according to the type of politeness strategy based on Brown and Levinson's theory (1987).The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The study revealed the types of politeness strategies used by Piers Morgan in his interactions with guests of diverse views. The occurrences of each type were: Bald on Record with 23 instances, Positive Politeness with 22 instances, Negative Politeness with 4 instances, and no Off-Record strategies were found. It was concluded that the Bald on Record strategy was more dominant. Additionally, Piers Morgan's use of politeness strategies was more directed at interlocutors with opposing views. This was due to the sensitivity of the topic, necessitating clarity and the avoidance of misunderstandings. On the other hand, this indicated a greater focus on managing interactions with guests who held opposing views. Moreover, these strategies helped create effective communicative interactions and mutual respect, especially during debates. Keywords: Piers Morgan, Politeness Strategies, Pragmatic, Talk Show.
