Abstract

Translation is a critical aspect that requires careful attention when exchanging information between different languages. Many works of literature are already being translated nowadays, especially novels. However, there are still some problems with converting words from one language to another. Deixis, as an important aspect of linguistics, should also be accurately translated to preserve the intended meaning. This study directs to know whether the social and discourse deixis in the novel are equivalent, compared to the translated version of the ‘As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow’ novel. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. The objectives of this study are to analyze all dialogues containing social and discourse deixis in the source language (English) and the target language (Indonesian), whether it is equivalent or unequivalent. The findings of the analysis are as follows: the novel contains all types of social and discourse deixis, including relational social deixis, absolute social deixis, and discourse deixis. Furthermore, discourse deixis is more frequently used, as it assists readers in following the story and contributes to maintaining clarity and cohesion within the narrative. Out of the total 272 data found in the novel, most of the dialogues containing social and discourse deixis are equivalent. Keywords: Translation, Deixis, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow Novel.
