Abstract

The purposes of this study were (1) to know whether there was any effect of using Email as an online ICT through independent learning on students’ ability in general to write descriptive text at grade XI in SMK Negeri 2 Bengkulu Tengah, (2) to know whether there was any effect of using Email as an online ICT through independent learning on students’ ability to write descriptive text on the aspects of writing, (3) to know the students’ responses about using Email as an online ICT through independent learning in teaching writing.This research employed a quasi experimental design. The subject comprised 50 students of grade XI in SMK Negeri 2 Bengkulu Tengah, divided into two classes, the experiment and control class.The instruments were writing test and questionnaire. The result showed that Email as online ICT was effective to improve (1) Students’ writing ability in general, (2) Email as online ICT was effective to improve students’ ability for various aspects of writing, namely; content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic. (3) The students also had positive attitudes toward the use of ICT media in taching writing. It is recommended to conduct an experiment for another school level to improve students’ writing ability.
