Abstract

The objectives of this research were: (1) to find the students’ achievements in Introduction to Literature subject, (2) to find the students’ achievements in ‘Prose’ subject, (3) to find out the correlation between both achievement. The design was basically a correlational study. The population of this research was the students of the English Department Universitas Bengkulu, who were first enrolled in the academic years 1998/1999, 2000/2001, and 2003/2004, who had taken both courses. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that: The students’ achievements in ITL who first enrolled in the academic years 1998/1999, 2000/2001, and 2003/2004 were good. The students’ achievements in Prose who first enrolled in the academic years 1998/1999, 2000/2001, and 2003/2004 were good. In the academic years 1998/1999 and 2003/2004, there was a high correlation between students’ achievements in ITL and their achievements in Prose. In the academic year 2000/2001, there was a low correlation between students’ achievements in ITL and their achievement in Prose. There was a positive correlation between students’ achievements in ITL and the ones in Prose. In the academic year 1999/1998, the correlation index was 0.729 and the strength correlation was high. In the academic year 2000/2001, the correlation index was 0.432 and the correlation was low. In the academic year 2003/2004, the correlation index was 0.781 and the correlation was high.
