Abstract

This descriptive study was aimed to investigate factors that trigger students’ negative attitude toward English subject at SMU N 1 Talang Empat. The population of this study was all the students of SMU N 1 Talang Empat with the total number of 585 students. The sample was 159 students. The instrument was in a form of a questionnaire consisting of 50 items based on motivation factor, interest factor, anxiety factor, reinforcement factor, material factor, teachers’ variation in teaching, facility factor and environment factor. The result of the study indicated that motivation, interest, facility, material and environment factors were those that triggered students’ negative attitude toward English subject at SMU N 1 Talang Empat. However, motivation factor was the most dominant factor with eighty-eight point sixty seven.
