Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive genre through inquiry teaching model at the tenth grade of MA AlHasanah Pondok Kelapa Bengkulu Utara in the 2006/2007 academic year. The subject of this research consists of 22 students. The research was conducted in three actions, they are; cycle one, cycle two, and post-test. Each of action consists of planning, implementation and reflection. Before implementing the first cycle, the researcher gave pre-test that was intended to know students’ score in writing descriptive genre. The result showed that the students’ mean score was very low. In pre-test it was found that the students’ mean score was 5.45, students’ absorption got 54.45 % , the percentage of mastery learning was 31.81 % and the average score of students’ activities in the classroom was 2.11 in less category. After implementing the cycle one, the students’ mean score, absorption, mastery learning and average score of students’ activities made a little progress. In the second cycle, the students’ mean score, absorption, mastery learning and average score of students’ activities made a better improvement. And in the post-test results showed that the students’ mean score got 8.59, students’ absorption was 85.91 %, and the percentage of mastery learning was 90.91 %, meanwhile the students’ average score of activities in the classroom got 4.22 in good category. Thus, the researcher concluded that inquiry teaching model could improve students’ ability in writing descriptive genre and it should be developed to other students and especially for Senior English Teachers.
