Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the error made by the second year students of SMKN I Bengkulu in writing English application letters. The population of this research was all of the second year students of SMKN I Bengkulu. The sample was 25 % of all the population chosen using random sampling method. The instrument of this research was three kinds of advertisement from the Jakarta Post newspaper. The data were collected by assigning the students to write an application letter based on the advertisement distributed to them. This respondents were given 60 minutes to write the letter. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the mistakes made by the students in writing the English application letter are found below. The students made mistakes in the field of tense using 25,36 %, spelling 34,39 %, word choice 18,7 % and punctuation 21,73 %.
