Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing Hedges Employed by English Education Study Program Lecturers and Students in Proposal Seminars. The data was collected from the lecturers‟ and students‟ utterances. The data was analyzed and classified based on Beugrande (1985) and Crystal (1996) theory. The finding shows that there were several types of hedges employed. The types consist of opinion hedges, statement hedges, group one and group two hedges. As result, opinion hedges were the most frequently used by the lecturers, especially for the expression of I think (35,9%). Meanwhile looks like, perhaps, basically and feel appeared once (2,6 %) and become the most infrequently hedges expressions used by the lecturers. Differ from the lecturers, the students employed I mean (42,9%) as the most frequently used hedges expressions, like and actually which appeared twice (14,3%) became the infrequently used hedges expressions.
