Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the violations of Cooperative principles by the members of SEC-EROS Facebook group in September until October 2011. The subjects of this research were the whole members of SEC-EROS group which consisted of English education study program students, English education study program lecturers. And the alumni of English education study program. The sample of this research covered 55 postings taken from the SEC-EROS group in September until October 2011. This research employed the discourse analysis method to analyze the violations if Cooperative principles in the postings. The data were collected by using the documentation technique following the following procedures: identified, collected, classified, analyze. The results show that the maxim that violated the most often among the SEC-EROS group members was Maxim of Manner. Meanwhile, the maxim that violated the most often by member to member of the SEC-EROS group was Maxim of Relation. Lastly, the maxim that violated the most often by members to lecturers was Maxim of Quantity. Moreover, the maxim of Quality was not frequently flouted in this research. In short, since this group was an informal media of communication, the way of communicating showed their close relationship in an informal sense rather than formal communication. Therefore, the violating of the maxims in the postings did not always break the communication, but it reflected maintaining a good informal relationship among members.
