Abstract
The lignin content in the seed coat may have a direct effect on permeability and on electrolyte conductivity of soybean genotypes. The research was designed to study variation of seed coat lignin content among soybean genotypes and its relationship to permeability and to seed electrolyte conductivity. Seeds of eleven soybean genotypes were hand harvested at R8 maturation stage in research plots at Agriculture Faculty, Bengkulu University on February 2001. Seed coat lignin content was determined using the potassium permanganat method. Seed permeability was evaluated by weighing three replicates of 10 seeds per genotypes after moistened with 2.5 ml of distilled water at 25C for 2 hours. Seeds were electrolyte conductivity tested using three replicates of 25 seeds per genotypes soaked in 25 ml of distilled water at 25 0 C for 24 hours. Genotype differences were evident for seed coat lignin content. The seed coat lignin content contributed to variability in permeability and in seed electrolyte conductivity. Significant negatif correlation between seed coat lignin content with permeability (r=-0,807**) and with seed electrolyte conductivity (r=-0,743**) was observed.
