Abstract
Cleared land fuel system causing decreased soil quality including soil moisture.Addition of biochar to soil is expected to increase soil moisture. This study aims to determine the influence of biochar on soil moisture conditions and variability of rice and corn. Research has been conducted in the village of Taba City District Niur Penanjung Central Bengkulu Bengkulu Province from May to October 2012. Research experiments using Randomized Complete ( RAKL ) with a single factor and repeated for three (3 ) times. Treatment consists of several doses of biochar A0 : control (without the addition of biochar, crop residues left dilahan ), A1 : Remaining plants are burned, A2 : Charcoal Wood ( 12 tons ha - 1 ) and A3 : coconut shell charcoal ( 12 tonsha - 1 ). Used as an indicator plant Corn and Upland Rice Bisi 16 varieties Infago. Parameters measured were evapotranspiration ( Blanney and Criddle method and Thornwaite ) and soil physical properties ( soil moisture levels Wind Dry, Saturated soil moisture levels, Levels Lengas Field Capacity and Actual soil moisture levels ). Corn growth ( plant height ) and yield of Upland Rice ( oven dry biomass weight, Weight Editorial, Heavy Heavy Roots and Seeds ). The results showed that the addition of biochar had no effect on soil moisture conditions and variability of upland rice and maize crops in slash fuel system. Addition of biochar also does not affect the weight of oven dry biomass, canopy weight, root weight and seed weight in rice. While the ash / plant residues ( A1 ) significantly affect plant height of corn
