Abstract

Undestanding the long term negative effect of pesticide application on health of vegetable farmers needs to be improved. Meanwhile the data of these facts is lack in Kabupaten Rejang Lebong. Research was conducted to evaluate the application of pesticides and its effect on e farmers' health status. The result will be used as a basis for the development of standard pesticide usage in Kabupaten Rejang lebong. About 10% of active farmers were sampled to evaluate the way of the farmers' handling methods in using pesticides and their health status based on their feeling and urine and blood sample. The results show that there were not available standard pesticides application procedures developed by Pemda Rejang lebong. The respondents actually have knowledge in handling of the pesticides at home. However, in the field they were exposed the pesticides quite a lot and did not obey the use of protective cloths, such as not using glasses, masker and gloves. In result, their health apparently were affected as more than half of the respondents felt tired, muscle cramps, dry throat, shortness of breath, headache, dizzy and other digestive system. However, there were not found any health problems based on urine and blood test sample.
