Abstract

The research has been done in the period of November 2008 to January 2009. This research was aimed to find out the effective concentration of Ipomoea batatas Poir leaves extract using n-hexana and methanol for inhibiting growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Ipomoea batatas Poir leaves were extracted by maseration method using n-hexana and methanol which divieded into five levels concentration (2%; 3.5%; 5%; 6.5% and 8%) and then the antibacterial activity was tested by using paper disc diffusion method with three replications. As the result, leaves that extracted by using n-hexana has the largest diameter of inhibition at the concentration of 3.5% (9.9 mm), while the largest diameter of inhibition for methanol was at concentration of 2% and 8% (each of concentration 12.3 mm). Statistically test by ANOVA showed that each of concentration was non significantly difference. It could be concluded that Ipomoea batatas Poir leaves extract that extracted using methanol were not significantly influence to inhibit growth of Staphylococcus aureus. However, it could be also stated that Ipomoea batatas Poir leaves extract that extracted using methanol more influence in inhibiting growth of Staphylococcus aureus rather than Tetracycline.
