Abstract

Coal is an important natural resource that can produce energy for electricity generation. The Bukit Asam Sector Steam Power Plant (PLTU) PT. PLN (Persero) is a state-owned company in charge of managing coal into fuel to produce electricity. The boiler working vapor after turning the turbine shaft is condensed into liquid fluid with the help of cooling tower. This means that the heat held by the working steam from the steam turbine is absorbed by the cooling media in the form of water that is circulated from the cooling tower. So that the vapor turns into a liquid phase with a lower temperature, and can be circulated again by the pump to supply water to the boiler to produce working steam. From the results of the analysis of the effectiveness of the mechanical tower mechanical draft Unit 3, obtained for theoretical conditions range 19 ºC, approach 1 ºC, 95% effectiveness 95 %, and make up water 1,674.550 m3 /hour. As for the condition range of 8 ºC, approach 1 ºC, effectiveness 89.889%, and make up water 1,407.343 m3 /hour. The effectiveness of actual cooling tower conditions is 94.62% from theoretical conditions, with a decrease of 5.111% and good operating conditions are categorized.
