Abstract
The aimed of this study is to figure out what indicates as a base sector of Bengkulu Province relying on value added approach of Gross Domestic Regional Product (PDRB) and employment utilization approach. Data of Bengkulu Province was compared to data from neighboring provinces (Bengkulu-Lampung-Jambi-Sumatera Barat known as Belajasumbar) for the period of 1999 to 2006. Data analysis by Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share and Overlay methods. Shift Share analysis shows that economic growth of Bengkulu influenced mostly by external factors, which 85.7% influenced by economic of Belajasumbar and 4.8% from sectoral economic Belajasumbar, and only 9.4% by competitiveness of Bengkulu’s economic growth. Overlay of LQ and Shift Share analysis on value added of PDRB found that potential leading sectors were Agriculture, Mining, Industry, Electricity, Gas and Water, and services. Similar Overlay based on employment found that potential leading sectors were Agriculture, Mining, Trade, and Services. Therefore, the study concluded that based on both PDRB and employment, potential base sectors for Bengkulu were Agriculture, Mining and Services.
