Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the optimum shading intensity and soil moisture content for growth and yield oftcmpuyung at lower altitude. A pot experiment was conducted at experimental field of Agronomy Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bcngkulu (10m above sea level). A split plot design was used for allocating treatments, i.e. shading intensities (0, 25 and 50%) as main plot and soil moisture contents as sub- plot. For all variable observed, there was no interaction effect between shading intensity and soil moisture content. Quadric responses to shading intensity were found on plant height, bud number, leaf dry weight, and stern dry wcight. The optimum intensity and the expected responses were 30.54% and 41.54 for plant height, 11.64% and 5.36 for bud number, 38% and 7.42 g for leaf dry weight, and 28.09% and 2.17 g for stem dry weight. This indicated that growth and yield oftempuyung at lower altitude were 8 - 18% higher as compared with those at high altitude. The plant showed positive linear responses to soil moisture content in plant height, total leaf area, leaf dry weight, and stem dry weight.
