Abstract

This research investigated the difficulties faced by the second semester student at
Broadcasting and TKJ (Teknik Komputer Jaringan) Classes of SMK N 3 Kota
Bengkulu in reading recount text. The subjects of the study were 65 students. They
were 33 students of TKJ class and 32 students of Broadcasting class. The data of the
research was collected by giving test. The test consisted of 50 items which were
divided into five test types. They were finding main and specific ideas,
comprehending whole text, making conclusion, vocabulary and grammar tests. Each
test type consisted of 10 items. The writer used descriptive technique to analyze the
data. The data were presented in percentage by formula S=F/N x 100%. The results
shows that the difficulties faced by the students in reading recount text were (1) the
difficulty in finding general and specific ideas. It was caused by limited of
comprehending in reading recount text and the limited of having vocabulary. (2) the
difficulty in comprehending whole text. It was caused by they did not have enough
bakground knowledge and they can not active their background knowledge well. (3)
the difficulty in making conclusion. It was caused by they had short-memories about
what they read. To make conclusion, students also involve their background
knowledge about what they read and what they infer out. (4) the difficulty of
vocabulary. It was caused by the lack of ability to predict the meaning of words in the
reading recount text and they did not have good reading strategies in guessing
unfamiliar words and (5) the difficulty of grammar. It was caused by the lack of
students’ abilities in grammatical and functional mastery to discriminate or choose
the best answer.
