Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether there is a significant
correlation between students’ translation ability and their reading comprehension
at the sixth semester students in English Education Study Program of Universitas
Bengkulu in academic year of 2018/2019. The research was designed as a
quantitative correlation study. The population of the research was the students
from the sixth semester of English Education Study Program. The samples were
38 students. The instrument of this research was reading comprehension test and
translation test. The alternative hypothesis: There is a correlation between
students’ translation ability and their reading comprehension. The collected data
were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment formula and using Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 16.00 to re-check the
calculation from manual formula. The result of this research revealed that there is
a correlation between students’ translation ability and their reading
comprehension because the correlation coefficient is 0.423 in rather weak
correlation categorized. Thus the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Then it
concluded that reading comprehension contributes to the translation ability
because to construct the meaning of words and to be able to translate properly, the
students have to learn and comprehend the text.
