Abstract

This study was designed as ananalytical research which was aimed to
analyzeDiscourse Markers used by students in writing argumentative text. The
instrument used to collect the data was writing test. The theories used were from
Fraser (1999) combined Martinez (2004) to find the dominant of Discourse
Markers and Kao and Chen (2011) to find the accuracy of Discourse Markers
written by the students. The subjects of this study were78 fifth semester students
of English study program in the academic year of 2018/2019. The result of the
study showed that the dominant Discourse Markers found was Elaborative
Markers (33.91%) with Alsooccur 101 occurrences (29.28%).In addition, the
result also showed that most of the students could use Discourse Markers
accurately in writing argumentative text because the inappropriateness found was
only 18 (5.19%) from 345 Discourse Markers.
