Abstract

This research is aimed to identify the categories of social deixis in Crazy Rich
Asian Movie by using Fillmore’s theory (1989) and to analyze the use of social
deixis in Crazy Rich Asian Movie by using Levinson’s theory (1983). This
research employed a descriptive-qualitative study since it describes social deixis
based on the utterances in the movie script. The data were collected from Crazy
Rich Asian movie script and watch the Crazy Rich Asian movie to strengthen
the utterance in the movie script. The table were provided by the researcher as
the instrument for collecting and analyzing the data. In this study, the first
findings showed 122 utterances of social deixis category with 6 deixis categories
found in this movie and consisted of 10 utterances of person marking, 11
utterances of speech level, 4 of distinction in utterance, 43 utterances of
honorific, 33 utterances of social act and 5 utterances of linguistic performance.
The second findings showed 67 utterances of the use of social deixis and
consisted of 48 utterances of intimacy, 15 utterances of politeness and 4
utterances of authority. Based on the data above, it seems that the social deixis
can illustrate the use of honorific and intimacy as the most used in this movie. It
reflects that even though the characters are wealth and live in western country,
they still try to conserve the eastern form and norms of their roots, which have
many values about the virtues of filial piety, politeness, and honesty. The
researcher would like to suggest the next researcher to continue the research
about social deixis analysis in other media such as talk show, platform comment
section, or in advertisement by using other social deixis theory and combine the
semantic field to others. As sociolinguistic, discourse, or etc.
