Abstract
Baker (2018) formed six types of equivalence, there are equivalence at word level,
equivalence above word level, grammatical equivalence, textual equivalence,
pragmatic equivalence and semiotic equivalence. The purpose of this research is to
analyze what equivalence strategies on the classification of word, above word and
grammatical level applied by Instagram Machine Translation in translating the
captions. The researcher analyzed the data using descriptive qualitative analysis. In
doing this research, the researcher related the translation equivalence and strategies
theory from Mona Baker (2018). The researcher analyzed the data based on the
classification of equivalence strategies at word level, above word level, and
grammatical level. The result showed that, in the at word level equivalence, the
researcher only discovered six of eight strategies applied by Instagram Machine
Translation. In the classification of above word level equivalence in the term of
collocation, the researcher only found two strategies. In the term of idiom and fixed
expression, the researcher only found two of five strategies. In the classification of
grammatical level equivalence, the researcher only found four of five strategies. It
can be concluded that Instagram Machine Translation has indeed used several
equivalence strategies, but Instagram Machine Translation still has some limitations
in doing translation so that not all equivalence strategies can be used. Equivalence is
only effective if you have a thorough understanding of what the source content is
attempting to convey. The researcher advised the readers who use Instagram Machine
Translation feature, to double-check the translation result to avoid missunderstanding.
