NEED ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH MATERIALS FOR ISLAMIC BANKING MAJOR AT VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

his research investigated the need analysis of English materials for
Islamic banking majors at vocational school. The main goals of this research
were to determine (1) the current learning condition of English teaching for
Islamic Banking major at tenth-grade students at SMKN 4 Lubuklinggau and (2)
the needs on English materials for Islamic banking major students at SMKN 4
Lubuklinggau. This study used a mixed-method research design which combining
quantitative and qualitative data analysis at the same time. This study involved
fifty students of Islamic banking major, 1 English teacher and 5 stakeholders as
the participants of this study. The data were collected by using questionnaires
and interviews. This study has found that Islamic banking major at SMKN 4
Lubuklinggau has already used English textbooks or materials based on the 2013
curriculum, and more than half of the students are also enthusiastic in
participating during the English learning process. However, it has been shown
that the material does not meet the students’ and teachers’ needs and appears to
be not very appropriate for the Islamic banking major in terms of learning
materials or English textbooks. In fact, the English materials needed by the
students of Islamic banking majors are vocabulary, functional texts,
conversations, and types of English texts related to Islamic banking majors. The
students expect to learn appropriate materials that can be applied in the
workplace, college or internships. Thus, it can be concluded that the English
materials recently used by the school should be suited to the needs of the
students. The improvement of material ought to be done to meet the student’s
needs in the future.
